Mansfield Boys Track Rolls To League-Meet Title
Hornets break 100-point mark to easily capture title on Saturday.
The boys’ indoor track team continued its outstanding 2010-11 campaign with a dominant performance during the Hockomock League Championship Meet on Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
On a day where they set both school and meet records, the Hornets got off to a fast start at the meet, accumulating an incredible point total of 103.5 to easily outdistance second-place North Attleboro, which scored 55 points.
Oliver Ames, which captured the Small School Division crown during the dual-meet season, placed third with 37 points and Attleboro was fourth with 27. Mansfield won the Large School Division dual-meet title this winter with a perfect 4-0 mark.

Junior Brian Ferreira got the meet off to a good start for Mansfield, finishing in fourth place in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.24 seconds. Junior Greg Donahue followed that up with a personal-best effort in the 55-meter dash, placing fourth in 6.96 seconds.
Senior captain Shayne Collins continued his tremendous roll, capturing the mile race with a time of 4:22.15. Though they did not place, senior Adam Osowski and sophomore Dan Caughey both ran personal bests. Osowski finished seventh with a time of 4:47, while Caughey was eighth in 4:47.76.

Mansfield scored 16 points in the 600 as senior captain Ryan Petrella won the event with a time of 1:24.5, while junior Griffin Robertson was second in 1:24.7. Junior Josh Lampron captured the 1,000 meters with a meet-record time of 2:30.15. Junior Kham Haleudeth placed fifth in that event, running a personal-best time of 2:40.7.
Senior captain Steve Gannon established a new school record in the 300 meters, winning the event with a time of 35.53. He broke the old school mark of 35.75 seconds, set by former Hornet standout Kyle Kilduff a year ago.
Junior Nick King put forth a fine performance in the 300 to place third with a time of 36.19 seconds, while junior Alex Kuras ran a personal-best time of 37.58 seconds to finish in fifth place. The Hornets scored 18 points in that event.
Mansfield earned three of the top four placements in the two mile. Senior captain Matt Cioe won the race with a time of 10:00.57. Junior Mitch Negus finished third in the event with a time of 10:14, while classmate Brendan McCarthy was fourth in 10:19.2.
Senior captain Bill Giannouloudis continued his consistent year in the shot put competition, finishing fifth overall with a distance of 40-10.75. Senior Patrick Greaney and Brian Ferreira both cleared the six-foot mark in the high jump. Greaney placed fifth with his effort, while Ferreira was sixth. Not to be outdone, the 4x400 relay team established a new meet record in the event. King (50.0), Petrella (51.6), Robertson (51.4) and Gannon (51.6) combined to capture the race in a meet-record time of 3:24.6.
Mansfield will look to carry the momentum from Saturday’s outstanding performance into the MIAA Division 2 State Meet next Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Reggie Lewis Center. The Hornets used a dominant performance to capture the divisional crown last winter.
If all goes well on the 19th, Mansfield will look for its second consecutive state title when the team heads back to the Reggie Lewis Center for the All-State meet on Friday, February 25. The Hornets captured the first indoor championship in the program’s history last year at the Reggie Lewis Center.
