Mansfield Man Charged with Assaulting Police Officer at Town Hall

John Connaughton, 56 is also accused of kicking a firefighter.

A Mansfield man faces charges after allegedly assaulting public safety officers and causing a disturbance in the town manager’s office.

John Connaughton, 56, was arraigned in Attleboro District Court and charged with two counts of assault and battery on a police officer, assaulting an ambulance crew member, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and resisting arrest, according to the Sun Chronicle.

At around 1 p.m., Connaughton went to town hall to search for a police officer who had assisted him in the past. After a secretary in the town manger’s office called police because he appeared to be intoxicated, he became upset, according to a police report.

Police attempted to calm Connaughton down but he became argumentative. When police tried to take him into protective custody, he allegedly punched a police officer. At the police station, he allegedly kicked a firefighter who was called to treat abrasions the suspect received.

Connaughton was arraigned on Thursday and was ordered held on $250 bail. He is due back in court on Jan. 12.
