Slow Down! Draper Avenue Speed Limit Dropping To 20 MPH

Wednesday night, Interim Town Manager John Stanbrook told the selectmen that the street has been adopted as a safety zone.

MANSFIELD, MA — Drivers on Draper Avenue will now be expected to stop speeding up and down the road.

Wednesday night, Interim Town Manager John Stanbrook told the selectmen that the street has been adopted as a safety zone and signs indicating a 20 mph speed limit will be going up as soon as possible.

The move comes two weeks after residents on the roads told the selectmen that vehicles traveling to and from the train station parking lot are speeding, sometimes going as fast as 40 mph. Traffic in the area has gotten worse due to an MBTA construction project at the station. The board gave both private lots the ability to park 60 extra cars each to make up for lost spots but the extra cars combined with the closure of the private way Allen Street has made traffic worse for the neighborhood.

In other train station-related news, Selectman Jess Aptowitz discussed the possibility of raising the fine for non-residents who park in residential spots. Currently, the fine is $25 and other board members are open to a fine hike.

“Maybe the issue was exaggerated in the past but having thought about this, we try to address all the problems by opening up more parking. Going forward in the future, we may want to raise the fines for non-resident parking,” Selectman Frank DelVecchio said.
