The Secret Lives of Native Bees

The Marblehead Conservancy invites all members, friends, and others to its Annual Meeting on Wednesday, April 29 at 7 p.m. featuring a presentation on “The Secret Lives of Native Bees” by guest speaker Dr. Nick Dorian.

You’ve probably heard “Save The Bees!,” but do you know which bees need saving? In this talk, Dr. Nick Dorian explains why it's native bees, not honey bees, that deserve our attention. There are over 4,000 species of native bees in North America, and they come in every size, shape, and color you can imagine. Drawing on a decade of his own research, including pollinator surveys at Lead Mills Conservation Area, Dorian will reveal the secret lives of native bees and the intricate relationships they have with flowering plants and other insects. You’ll come away with clear action items for how ecologically-informed land stewardship can help these important pollinators.

Dr. Nick Dorian is a pollinator ecologist, consultant, and speaker. Through engaging and educational programs on pollinators and native plants, Dorian enchants audiences nationwide, helping people connect to nature starting in their backyards and gardens. As an award-winning consultant, Dorian brings science-backed insights to enhance green space for both people and pollinators. His work has been featured in leading academic journals, and in venues like USA Today, CBS News, The Boston Globe, and on the Tedx stage. He received his Ph.D. in Biology from Tufts University and is currently based in Orleans, Massachusetts.
