The Spanish Inquisition remains one of history's most complicated institutions, its legacy shaped as much by legend and polemic as by archival record. Join linguist and historian Nettah Yoeli-Rimmer as he examines the Inquisition not simply as an instrument of religious persecution, but as a calculated tool of state-building under Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile. Explore how a fragmented kingdom gave rise to a unified Spanish identity and the Inquisition's impacts on Spain's Jewish community.
A viewing of the online lecture will be held in the Event Center at Abbot Public Library, followed by a discussion session.

Nettah Yoeli-Rimmer studied French and Spanish literature before going on to get a master’s in European culture at the University of Cambridge. He has traveled extensively and has many years of experience leading educational adventures in France, Spain and Italy. He has recently completed a Ph.D. in 19th-century Spanish literature. In addition to his principal research, he regularly writes for a number of publications on urban history and architecture.

Turn everyday cardboard into creative new inventions! Participants will upcycle cardboard into imaginative structures of their choice using safe cutting tools, the Chomp Saw, and reusable Makedo connectors. Each builder will leave with a unique cardboard creation.&nbsp;

Teens ages 13 and up are invited to help build a six-foot-tall K'NEX Ferris wheel in this collaborative drop-in makerspace challenge. Participants can stop by anytime during the two-hour session to contribute, whether that means following the build plans, troubleshooting tricky sections, or helping bring the moving structure to life. Working together, teens will explore how simple mechanical connections combine to create a large-scale engineering project. Stay for a few minutes or the entire session—every contribution helps complete the build!

Join early childhood music specialist Dara VanRemoortel for summer bedtime stories and songs. The program will include an assortment of songs, rhythmic activities, creative movement, simple instrument playing, and lots of imagination. We hope you can join us! We will be meeting in the Courtyard if it is nice, or the Event Center if it isn’t. Please bring a blanket in case the program is outside, and feel free to bring children in pajamas and with a stuffed toy if they want!

Far from embracing his selection as commander-in-chief, he feared it would lead to his ruin - and possible death. Join author and historian Dr. Edward Lengel as he explores how Washington’s hope for America’s future led him to take on leadership in the struggle for independence. Celebrate the United States of America’s 250th anniversary in 2026 through the lens of Washington’s leadership in the Revolutionary War.

Edward G. Lengel is an award-winning historian and educator. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, where he directed the Washington Papers Project and later held senior roles in public history. An author, speaker, and battlefield guide, Lengel has written 14 books on American history, including the official history of Colonial Williamsburg and “General George Washington: A Military Life.” He is a corecipient of the National Humanities Medal and has won two writing awards from the Army Historical Foundation.
