Session 1: Captivating Characters
In this creative writing workshop, we will work on creating interesting characters. We’ll do a variety of exercises - written, visual, and spoken - to get young writers thinking about the types of characters they’d like to star in their stories. We will also practice literary devices associated with those characters, such as motivation and voice.
Thursday, August 6th
Session 2: Intriguing Plots
In this creative writing workshop, we will work on creating intriguing plots. We’ll discuss the typical arc construct of solid story plots, and we’ll do a variety of exercises to get us there, including generating ideas of all genres (from humor to mystery). We will discuss associated plotting devices, such as hook, set-up, turning points, climax, and resolution, and apply them to our own story structures.
Wednesday, August 12th
Session 3: Captivating Characters + Intriguing Plots = Compelling Stories
In this creative writing workshop, we will discuss the roles of character and plot in creating compelling stories. We will do a variety of exercises to develop and strengthen both, including those that explore tense, point-of-view, and dialogue.
