Great View of National Landmarks for Phone Scammer

Man calls resident claiming to be from IRS, says he can see White House and Statue of Liberty from his desk.

Phone scams prey on the weak and vulnerable, but when the tables are turned, the scammers often turn out not to be the brightest bulbs.

On Tuesday afternoon, a man walked into the police station and said he had been the target of an attempted phone scam.

The man said he got a call from someone claiming to be David William from the IRS. William told the man the he owed the IRS money, and that if he did not pay it, he would be arrested.

William said he was calling from Washington, DC, so the Marblehead man asked William if he could see the White House from his office.

The man then asked if he could see the Statue of Liberty.

Amazingly enough, William must have had a pretty good vantage point in the nation’s capital, because he said he could see the Statue of Liberty, as well.

The Marblehead man then asked William what his own social security number was. William told him that was “highly classified information.”

As always, don’t give out personal information over the phone, especially if someone calls and says they are from the IRS and that they can see the Empire State Building and the Grand Canyon from their desk.
