MARBLEHEAD, MA — The Marblehead Police Department is facilitating a $5,000 donation to the family of a 10-year-old Marblehead girl for costs related to her inoperable brain tumor, according to a press release from the PD. Cops for Kids with Cancer is providing the much-needed money, and Marblehead cops are happy to take part.
Sophia Smith was diagnosed with an aggressive, rare brain tumor on March 1, the press release said, but she's a fighter. She's been treated at the Children's Hospital in Boston, but the next step in her treatment is across the pond.

Harley Street Clinic in London will provide Sophia with a pioneering treatment not available in the United States. "Above all, Sophia is truly a warrior!" the press release said. "She is so brave and has been so tough throughout all of this. Never once has she complained, looking for pity from anyone or said 'poor me.'"
The Marblehead Police Department joined with Cops for Kids with Cancer to provide the money, which will be presented to Sophia's family at 10 a.m. on Oct. 10 at Seaside Park on Atlantic Avenue. The Smith family will arrive by police escort.
