Marblehead Runners Respond: Relief, Gratitude and Sadness

We asked several of the 22 Marblehead runners who were registered for the Boston Marathon for their thoughts as they look back to the events of the last week and look ahead future marathons.

We sent three marathon runners from Marblehead two questions asking them if they plan to run Boston again and their response to news that the second bombing suspect had been captured?

Here is what Steven Keenholtz and Jennie Sheridan had to say.

Steven Keenholtz:

"I do expect to be running in 2014 in boston g-d willing.  I trust the officials in charge will do what is necesary to maintain a safe environment.  I pray that will not destroy what is the greatest part of the boston marathon which are the spectators.  There are so many people who are out there cheering on the runners.  They inspire us to keep going when there is little left in the tank.  No matter what one is wearing the fans identify each runner and cheer us on.  I am Boston Strong!"

"(I'm) relieved that the immediate threat is removed.  Sadness for all of the injured and those who lost their lives."

Jennie Sheridan:

I do plan to run Boston again.  I was relieved and glad that the bombing suspects had been identified so quickly, and that the second suspect was detained after what was a very surreal day in Watertown, Boston and the surrounding areas.   The impact of what happened will be long lasting, and there are a lot of physical and emotional wounds.  I think people are able to move now towards grieving and healing and trying to process the events of last week.  I am certainly proud to be part of a community and a team who has embraced each other in the midst of such tragedy, and shown such strength and compassion throughout the past week.

Shalane Flanagan, the Marblehead runner finished fourth at Boston in the women's category, noted in Twitter tweets that her "heart hurts, but the healing must begin. We will be back stronger than ever."
