Second Marblehead Attempted Mailbox Theft Within One Week

Police said a man was seen trying to steal items from the mailbox in front of the U.S. Post Office on Smith Street early Monday morning.

MARBLEHEAD, MA — A man was seen trying to steal mail from the box on Smith Street in front of the U.S. Post Office Monday morning in the second case of attempted mail theft in Marblehead within the past week.

Last week, Marblehead police said a bag of mail was stolen from the mailbox in Widger Road and check payments for town utilities and property taxes were missing.

On Monday, police said a resident walking a dog at about 5:30 a.m. saw a man "actively attempting to take items from the box" on Smith Street.

Police said the man was confronted and "hastily left the area."

"It is unclear if any items were stolen from the box," police said.

Police said they searched the area and found no suspects. They are investigating both incidents along with U.S. Postal Service police.

Both areas are busy during business hours and well-lit at night.

Police ask that anyone who saw something suspicious in either area call detectives at 781-631-1212.
