16 Dogs, Four Cats, Rescued by MSPCA from Marlborough Home

Owing to huge demand for purebred dogs and cats in Massachusetts, the 16 Shih Tzu dogs and four Siamese cats surrendered from a Marlborough house on Monday are expected to quickly find new homes, according to the MSPCA-Angell’s Boston adoption center staffers involved in their rescue.

The animals were living in a home described as cramped and unsuitable for the number of animals living inside. The animals’ previous owner, whose identity is not being released, voluntarily surrendered them to the MSPCA’s Law Enforcement dept. upon realizing the situation in the home had become untenable. No charges have been filed.

The MSPCA’s Boston adoption center team removed the animals, transported them to the Jamaica Plain shelter and began veterinary and behavior exams. According to adoption center manager Alyssa Krieger, the animals have a bright a future: “The animals are generally in fine shape. Many of them are dirty; some of the dogs are matted; and, of course, their home environment was less than ideal. But we’re confident we can place all of them for adoption in the next few weeks.”

Krieger said that six of the dogs are adults, ranging in age from one to five years. The 10 puppies range in age from five to 12 weeks old. The two Siamese cats are one year old, with two four-month-old kittens.

Huge Demand Anticipated

The MSPCA has already placed some of the puppies in foster care until they reach eight weeks of age and are available for adoption. The rest of the animals will be available for adoption beginning next week. Interested adopters can email adoption@mspca.org with questions about the animals as well as the adoption process.
