4 Big Things Coming In 2023 To Marlborough

From a big election to a rare fast-food chain opening, here are a few things to keep an eye on in 2023.

MARLBOROUGH, MA — With New Year's Day in the past and Christmas tree collections starting soon, the 2022 holiday season is firmly in the past.

That means it's time to start looking forward to what's coming in 2023. Here are just a few big items you can look forward to in the upcoming 12 months.

2023 election

It's hard to believe, but it's already time for another municipal election. In 2023, city council seats will be up for election, as well as three seats on the school committee. Mayor Arthur Vigeant will be up for a seventh term in 2023.

The greatly expanded Marlborough Public Library will most likely open in spring or early summer. The project broke ground in September 2021 with a projected finish midway through 2023. In the last update at the end of December, crews were doing work on the interior, including hanging drywall and installing windows.

Raising Cane’s opening

The rare fast-food restaurant faced a lawsuit from McDonald's (it's next-door neighbor at 141 Boston Post Road) but apparently plans to open in 2023. The Marlborough restaurant will be only the second one in Massachusetts.

Developments move ahead

Residents could see major developments on major developments in the city. The nearly 300-unit Alta Marlborough project got the green light in July. Meanwhile, JW Capital Partners has proposed a 99-unit, mixed-use development at the John P. Rowe Funeral Home site next to Union Common. The city has also approved a 140-unit housing complex at 339 Boston Post Road, known as Wolcott Heritage Farms.
