A new leader for the schools, a new use for the downtown pocket park and a chance for seniors to roll up their sleeves and roll back their taxes.

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations.

1. Marlborough could know who the next leader of its schools will be by day’s end. The School Committee meets at 4:30 in the District Education Center and the sole item on its agenda is discussion of the superintendency “and decisions about and up to the hiring of an interim suprerintendent.”

2. The CIty Council’s Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee also meets Thursday and will discuss whether Marlborough should adopt a senior tax work-off program that enables senior citizens to earn up to $1,000 a year off their tax bills by working for the city. The meeting starts at 4:30 in City Hall.

3. The plans to make good use of the new . The library will offer a children’s story time in the park on Wednesday, Aug. 8 at 10 a.m.

4. Thunderstorms may have broken the heat in Marlborough Wednesday and brought some needed rain, but much of the country remains in severe drought conditions. Experts are now saying it won’t be long before the impacts of the dry weather show up in the form of higher prices for everything from milk to gasoline--which is blended with corn-based ethanol.

5. Locally, the departure of the heat is setting the stage for some perfect summer weather. Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 70s and 80s with low humidity through the weekend.
