📰 News we're reading

1. Marlborough Firefighters Union Renews Call For More Staffing (patch.com) — Marlborough firefighters are urging city leaders to boost staffing, warning that call volumes have surged nearly 50 percent since 2014 while on-duty firefighter numbers remain stuck at 1990s levels. Union president Matthew Armour says development across the city is driving more emergencies and argues that investing in additional personnel and long-term planning, including a potential Westside station, is critical for resident and firefighter safety.

2. Marlborough Students Join State-Funded Highway Construction Training Program (patch.com) — Assabet Valley juniors in Marlborough are spending the week in a state-funded highway construction training program that mixes classroom instruction with hands-on skills like concrete work, demolition, and safety training. Supported by MassDOT’s Pre-Apprenticeship initiative, the program brings in local public works leaders and includes a visit to the New England Laborers Training Academy to connect Marlborough students with real-world construction careers.

3. Find Marlborough Cheapest Gas Ahead Of Record Memorial Day Travel Weekend (patch.com) — Marlborough drivers heading out for the Memorial Day weekend are seeing higher gas prices, but there are still a few relatively cheaper options in town, with stations on Maple, Lincoln and East Main streets topping the value list. The piece explains how current Massachusetts and national averages affect the cost of a typical road trip and shares expert advice on when to fill up, as record numbers of travelers prepare to hit the road.

4. Meet the Revolution's artists, spies and other unheralded patriots (usatoday.com) — A little-known chapter of Revolutionary-era history briefly passes through Marlborough, where enslaved portrait painter Prince Demah was reunited with his mother and trained in art. The wider conversation explores how overlooked artists, women, and people of color used creativity, espionage, and activism to influence the American Revolution and stretch ideas of liberty and equality. It’s a thoughtful look at whose stories we remember as the nation nears its 250th birthday.
