2 Dead After Shooting In Berlin, I-495 Highway Standoff

A victim and a suspect are dead after a Berlin shooting led to an I-495 standoff in Lowell.

BERLIN, MA — Two people have died following a fatal shooting in Berlin on Tuesday afternoon, according to local and state officials.

Berlin police responded shortly after 3:30 p.m. on June 30 to reports of a shooting at Highland Commons, where officers and emergency crews found a person suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene after responders rendered aid, according to the Worcester County District Attorney's Office.

After the shooting, a witness followed the alleged suspect onto I-495 north and called Massachusetts State Police. Troopers later stopped the suspect’s pickup truck on the highway near the Lowell Connector.

The stop led to a standoff that closed I-495 in both directions, with detours in place most of Wednesday afternoon. State police said all lanes of traffic officially opened in both directions at around 10:30 p.m.

Following an initial investigation, Massachusetts State Police said the suspect appeared to have suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead.

The State Police Crisis Negotiations Team, State Police Department of Field Services and State Police detectives assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office responded to the Lowell scene; while emergency crews at the Berlin scene included the Berlin Police Department, Hudson Police Department, Berlin Fire Department and EMS, Bolton Fire Department and Boylston Fire Department.

Officials said there is no threat to the public.

The investigation remains in its early stages and will continue in the coming days.
