Hospital Campus In Marlborough Gets Largest Donation In History For ER Expansion

A Marlborough-based company donated half a million dollars to support the hospital's emergency department renovation and expansion.

MARLBOROUGH, MA — UMass Memorial Medical Center's Marlborough Campus has received the largest donation in its history for a major expansion of emergency and specialty care.

BJ's Wholesale Club donated $500,000 through its charitable foundation to support the hospital's emergency department renovation and expansion, the health system announced. The project is intended to meet rising demand, reduce wait times and expand access to care in Marlborough and surrounding communities.

The donation is also the largest made toward the project. The hospital will name the emergency department's Family Waiting Area in honor of Marlborough-based BJ's.

Plans call for nearly doubling the number of patient rooms from 13 to 23, along with new treatment rooms, rooms designed for individuals of size and two new trauma rooms.

"We are grateful to BJ's for this transformative and visionary gift, which will help address growing demand for urgent and emergency care in the region," UMass Memorial Health President and CEO Eric Dickinson said in a statement.

The BJ's contribution follows two other donations announced this year. St. Mary's Credit Union pledged $125,000, with the money to be distributed evenly from 2026 through 2030, according to an earlier Patch report. The Main Street Group Foundation, the charitable arm of Main Street Bank, donated $100,000 in March.

The project also includes a Specialty Care Center that will provide chronic disease management and specialty services. The center is expected to open in early 2027.

Construction began in October 2025 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, according to UMass Memorial Health.
