Blue-Green Algae Blooms Spotted At Marlborough Reservoir

MARLBOROUGH, MA — City health officials are warning residents to use caution after blue-green algae appeared at Fort Meadow Reservoir.

The Marlborough Board of Health issued an alert Thursday after observing blooms in parts of the reservoir. Contact with the blooms can make people and animals sick, the Health Department says.

Residents should avoid blooms while swimming, fishing or boating and use areas without visible blooms or surface scum. Children and pets should also be kept away from affected water.

Blue-green algae blooms can resemble streaks, spilled paint, pea soup or floating clumps and dots. Anyone who comes into contact with a bloom should rinse with clean water and contact a medical provider if symptoms develop.
