MARLBOROUGH, MA — Construction of the new Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab has reached a major milestone less than four months after officials broke ground.
The final structural beam was placed Sept. 25 at the four-story, 200,000-square-foot facility under construction at 100 Martinangelo Drive, architects Ci Design Inc. announced. The lab is expected to be completed in 2028 and will consolidate existing operations in Maynard and Sudbury, bringing more than 250 forensic professionals into one location.
Representatives from State Police, the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance and the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security attended the topping-off event. Members of the project team from Greatland Realty Partners, Consigli Construction Co. and Ci Design also participated.
Greatland is developing the facility, Consigli is serving as construction manager and Ci Design is the architect. The building is designed to achieve LEED Silver certification, Patch reported.
The state entered into a 20-year lease for the lab following a competitive procurement process, with options for two 10-year extensions. Officials have said the lease arrangement will allow the facility to open sooner than it would through a traditional state-funded construction process.
The nationally accredited State Police Crime Lab provides forensic services to investigators, prosecutors and courts across Massachusetts. Its work includes DNA testing, toxicology, firearms analysis, drug chemistry, fingerprint examination, digital evidence analysis and crime scene response.
State Police also announced during National Forensic Science Week that the lab had been reaccredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board, which evaluates forensic operations for technical competence and quality standards.
