Friends of Marlborough Library to Host Youth Arts Festival

The Friends of the Marlborough Public Library announces the 20th Annual Young People's Performing Arts Festival will be on May 24.

From the Friends of the Marlborough Public Library: The Friends of the Marlborough Public Library is pleased to announce the 20th Annual Young People’s Performing Arts Festival. This is a competition open to high school age instrumentalists in the greater Marlborough area. Up to five finalists will be chosen to perform the evening of Wednesday, May 24, 2017. Each of the finalists will receive a prize of $125-$150, depending upon the number of finalists. Musicians who have been finalists in this competition in previous years are not eligible to compete.

Individual musicians or ensembles of up to five musicians may audition for the finalist positions. Contestants must provide their own accompanists for the performance, where applicable. Some years we’ve had the same accompanist for multiple performers. The auditions will be held in the Marlborough Public Library’s Bigelow Auditorium on Saturday, March 4, 2017 between 10AM and 2PM before a panel of three judges. Contestants should plan a recital presentation of about 15 minutes. They should be prepared to play at least a 5-10 minute representative portion of their recital piece (s) during the audition. Two copies of the music to be performed must be brought to the audition for the judges. Students will not be expected to perform their music from memory.

Contestants will be notified of the results within five days. Only two finalists per instrument or ethnic style will be chosen. At the performance on May 24th, each finalist will be expected to perform for about fifteen minutes. Sheet music will be allowed during the performance. Applications are available from your music teacher, or from Leslie Havens (617-524-3775 or quintbrass@earthlink.net). Applications can also be downloaded from the Friends’ website, then click on Events—March 4th date.
