Longtime Marlborough High School Football Coach Sean Mahoney Dies At 63
He taught and coached at Marlborough High School from 2004 to 2024.
MARLBOROUGH, MA — Sean Mahoney, the longtime Marlborough High School football coach remembered as a mentor across the school community, has died.
Mahoney, 63, died Friday, June 12, after a battle with Multiple System Atrophy, according to his obituary. He taught and coached at Marlborough High School from 2004 to 2024.
Marlborough Public Schools remembered Mahoney as “a tireless champion for our students, our schools, and the entire Marlborough community.”

The district's music department said Mahoney was also a steady supporter of the school’s music program, visiting Band Camp each year to thank students for the “energy, spirit, and tradition” they brought to Kelleher Field on Friday nights.
“Coach Mahoney’s legacy will endure through the countless lives he touched as a mentor, colleague, friend, and role model,” MPS Music Department said in an announcement on Monday. “His impact on generations of students and families will be felt for years to come.”

Mahoney was a member of the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, according to the association’s Hall of Fame list. Across 20 seasons with Marlborough, he won 154 games and was named the MIAA 2020-21 Football Coach of the Year, according to MetroWest Daily News.
Visitation is scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 18, at Short & Rowe Funeral Home, 95 West Main St. in Marlborough, according to the funeral home. A funeral mass will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Matthias Church in Marlborough.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Mission MSA.
