Marlboro Charter School Gets Scanning Electron Microscope

The Advanced Math & Science Academy Charter School became the first public school in the state to house a scanning electron microscope.

MARLBOROUGH, MA- The Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School, a public school in Marlborough, is now the first public school in the state to house a scanning electron microscope.

The microscope was donated by Thermo Fisher Scientific, a Waltham based service science company. The microscope is Phenom ProX Desktop SEM- a desktop microscope used for research.

The Advanced Math & Science Academy Charter School will use the new equipment in its science research program where 10th-12th graders conduct graduate school level research in areas such as cancer marker genes. In a release by Thermo Fisher Scientific, the company said "The Phenom’s incomparable microscopic imaging and high quality resolution promise to take AMSA’s program to new heights, while opening new doors for its students."

The Advanced Math & Science Academy Charter School science research program allows students to start in 10th grade and continue through 12th grade. Programs are offered in four subjects: molecular biology, geochemistry, wildlife management and engineering.

The school also offers student internships with various companies including Thermo Fisher Scientific.
