Marlboro Shamrocks Semi-pro Football Team To Return This Year

The team in the New England Football League will compete in the upcoming summer season, according to league standings.

MARLBOROUGH, MA — Marlborough's semi-professional football team has announced it will return this year.

Marlboro Shamrocks will make a comeback for the 2026 Season, the team's owner and general manager, Stephen Maycock, announced on Sunday. The team in the New England Football League will compete in the upcoming summer season, according to the NEFL standings.

"It's official, there will be football in Marlborough once again. Your shamrocks are back and better than ever for the 2026 Season," Maycock wrote in a news release. "We are dedicated to rebuilding a family-friendly atmosphere and being a staple of the community."

The Shamrocks, which have been around for more than 60 years, decided not to play in 2025, according to the MetrowestDaily News. The news outlet reported that the team's owners and head coach stepped away because "they don't have time to dedicate toward putting out a product up to the team's standards."

In addition to a new owner, the team will also have a new head coach this season, according to the announcement.

There are more than 30 teams in the NEFL, all of which consist of men aged 18 and up. The league is organized into four conferences: Spring, Colonial, North Atlantic and Maritime. Marlboro is in the North Atlantic Conference with eight other teams for the summer season.

Maycock said the team's intention is to rebuild the Shamrocks to their former glory.

"The way you can be involved is support. Your love on social media, at games, and around town will be greatly appreciated," Maycock wrote. "With your love the team will continue operations at a high level. The Shamrocks will uplift the community, and we would love the community to uplift the Shamrocks. We look forward to bringing another championship to the great city of Marlborough."
