MARLBOROUGH, MA — Ward 3 Councilor Christian Dumais is one of nine Marlborough Councilors who are running unopposed in 2021, which means he will be reelected following the Nov. 2 election.

Dumais first won the Ward 3 seat in 2017, defeating former councilor Matt Elder (who defeated Dumais in the 2015 election for the seat). He's running again in 2021, he says, to complete work that was put on hold during the pandemic.

Here's what Dumais had to say about his run for reelection this year:

Why did you decide to run for another term in 2021?

I decided to run again in 2021 because after the 18 months prior with COVID-19 we, as a council, have a lot of things to accomplish. I wanted to ensure that city projects that were allocated for Ward 3 are still in the pipeline. Many projects took a hiatus and these projects need to be completed.

You're running unopposed this year. Does that concern you, and what's one way the city might be able to get more citizens involved in local politics?

Running unopposed is always sad/sweet. There is a luxury where one can breathe a little easier by being unopposed, but on some level sadness that more people do not take an interest in local government. I still get excited knowing I have a key to city hall. Also, the idea that my vote can add to the dynamic and scope of the city and I can be the voice for Ward 3. It’s not about the power, it’s about the ability to be able to have a whole different level of appreciation for the city that I live and work in. I hope that people feel the same and maybe they will over time, I was not always as passionate about the city. I am thankful to be able to serve for as long as Ward 3 wants to have me.

What's your top priority for the next term?

I know that most councilors will say the fire station which is an obvious need. I think the most important thing is to try to reconnect with constituents. I believe with the pandemic there has been a disconnect. We, as councilors, are always available via phone or email but I do miss seeing people face to face and establishing that connection. Running a business during this time and having this role has been very difficult during the pandemic. The shop is in a good place now and I can focus more attention on the constituents and the city. With each term you learn and grow, I hope to have more responsibilities within the council to be a more effective Councilor.
