MARLBOROUGH, MA — Like many of us, local elected officials are heading into a 2020 with specific goals and resolutions. Marlborough Mayor Arthur Vigeant has a number of projects he's looking ahead to in 2020 that touch on schools, politics, and transportation.

Vigeant was just reelected in November to his third term as mayor, but served for 18 years before that as a City Councilor. That means many of the things he's looking ahead to this year have been in the works for a while.

At the top of Vigeant's list is the opening of a new $56.4 million elementary school near the high school. He says he's focused on a smooth opening in fall 2020.

Next up is the moving of the Marlborough Public Library from 35 West Main St. to a temporary site at the Walker Building. The city has bonded $24 million to build a new facility set to be complete by June 2022. The move will happen over the summer.

In 2019, Marlborough started running a free shuttle between the Southborough MBTA station, Apex Entertainment, and the Marlborough Hills campus. The shuttle is for commuters headed to and from Marlborough, but also runs during daytime hours for seniors. Vigeant said he hopes to oversee an expansion of the line in 2020.

Vigeant also wants to start planning for a new fire station on the west side of the city, move more quickly on road repair projects, and get to know the city's three new incoming City Councilors, Samantha Perlman, Laura Wagner, and Sean Navin.

"We're focused on moving things forward here," Vigeant said.
