Marlborough Mayoral Race Split Three Ways
Mayor Arthur Vigeant is being challenged by two outsiders.
MARLBOROUGH, MA — With a month left until Marlborough's preliminary elections, campaign season in the city is in full swing. This year, voters have three options on the ballot for mayor as two candidates have come forward to challenge Mayor Arthur Vigeant for his seat.
Kenith St. John, a small business owner, and David Garceau, a veteran police officer in the city are challenging Vigeant for his seat as mayor. All three submitted paperwork and had their nomination papers certified before the Sept. 3 deadline, putting them on the preliminary election ballot.
Marlborough's preliminary election will be on Oct. and the city election will be held on Nov. 5.

Vigeant is going for his fifth term as mayor and has been in city politics for over 20 years. He served on the City Council for 18 years and was president of the council for nine of them. Vigeant was elected mayor in 2011 and won each election following in 2013, 2015 and 2017.
Longtime Marlborough police officer David Garceau is challenging Vigeant for mayor. Garceau has been a police officer in the city for almost 39 years and has labeled himself a conservationist. According to the MetroWest Daily News, some of the issues Garceau is focused on include rising water rates and the affect growing residential development has on infrastructure.

The third mayoral candidate on the ballot is Kenith St. John, a small business owner with political experience. While St. John owns a compression sock company, he ran a brief campaign last year for the 3rd Congressional District seat. He was one of 13 Democrats to run but dropped out to take on the roll of economic advisor for Democrat Alexandra Chandler.
The deadline to register to vote for the preliminary election is 8 p.m. on Sept. 18, a guide on how to register to vote is available on the city website. The last day to register to vote in the city election is 8 p.m. on Oct. 16.
