Southborough Cop Was Stabbed At Police Station

The stabbing happened near 10 p.m. Monday at the Southborough police station along Route 85.

SOUTHBOROUGH, MA — A Southborough police sergeant was stabbed in the back Monday night during an incident at the police headquarters building along Route 85, according to the Worcester County District Attorney's Office.

The stabbing happened around 10 p.m. Monday. Sgt. James Deluca had interviewed a man — identified by the DA as Stuart Angus, 35, of Southborough — about threats he made. A mental health clinician recommended the man be taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

As Deluca was preparing to send Angus to the hospital, Angus stabbed Deluca with a folding knife, according to the DA. The knife penetrated Deluca's vest, but prevented him from suffering a serious injury. Deluca was treated at UMass Memorial in Worcester and released on Tuesday.

Angus ran from the police station, but was caught nearby. He was eventually taken to Bridgewater State Hospital, and is being charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon, according to the DA.

Before the stabbing, Angus was recording video to social media. The video captures three police officers standing around Angus in the Southborough public safety building lobby, and one officer talks to him about going to the hospital in either an ambulance or a police car. Angus chooses the ambulance.

At one point in the video, Angus says that the police are trying to kill him. One officer pleads with Angus to stop yelling in the police lobby. The video does not show any physical interactions between Angus and police officers.

Angus will undergo a mental health evaluation, and will appear in court next on June 29.
