MARLBOROUGH, MA — Help is on the way for Marlborough drivers whose cars — and teeth — have been rattled by deep potholes that have opened up in recent weeks.

The Marlborough Department of Public Works will fill new potholes beginning on Wednesday, the department said recently. Pothole work can only be done under certain conditions, and when asphalt is available.

"Numerous potholes (some large ones) have recently formed in the past few days due to an extreme freeze/thaw cycle and plowing," the department said before the weekend. "The DPW will be out in force to address these potholes ... and will continue as weather permits."

At minimum, temperatures need to be above about 40 degrees for asphalt repairs to stick. Asphalt plants also operate at a reduced capacity in winter due to the energy required to keep the mix hot.

According to the current forecast, temperatures should be just right for asphalt repairs all the way through the weekend. It'll be above 40 for the next five days, and might even hit 50 on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
