Cape Cod Beach Cleanup Nets 3,000+ Pieces Of Trash
The Center for Coastal Studies recently hosted a Coastsweep Cleanup at Long Point in Provincetown.

PROVINCETOWN, MA — Volunteers recently collected more than 3,000 pieces of trash at Long Point peninsula in Provincetown as part of a "Coastsweep Cleanup" effort hosted by the Center for Coastal Studies. About 50 volunteers participated. They collected a total of 3,622 items, higher than last year's mark of 3,529.

"We could not have done it without the help of Flyers Boat Rentals who shuttled us out there twice, and for Napi's restaurant providing a wonderful lunch for the cleanup crew," the center said in a statement.

This is a breakdown of the trash collected at Long Point in ascending order:
- Straws/Stirrers: 99
- Netting/pieces of netting: 173
- Plastic bottles: 191
- Balloons/balloon strings: 194
- Food Wrappers: 196
- Plastic Wrapping: 220
- Styrofoam pieces: 241
- Caps/lids: 261
- Non-descript plastic: 311
- Rope: 728
The Center for Coastal studies is a nonprofit based in Provincetown. It operates a marine life rescue squad that frequently cuts whales, sharks and sea turtles — among other ocean creatures — free from fishing gear, specifically ropes.
