This course is an introduction to Mosaic Art using smalti- an Italian Byzantine glass material used in both traditional and contemporary mosaic works. This workshop will give students the opportunity to create a beautiful, rich piece using this versatile luminous material. Students will be introduced to all facets and applications of mosaic and will create a work that explores color, texture and the personal vision of the artist. Participants will learn about mosaics- both ancient and contemporary, specific tools and cutting techniques, applications and adhesives. This 3 day workshop is ideal for absolute beginners as well as experienced artists who have not experimented with this material OR for those who are willing to dive into a new art medium headfirst. Ms. Ami will meet individually with each student to assess and guide them through their projects. Students can choose to select a will be asked to bring in a drawing, photo, or other reference as a starting point for their design. Participants will be encouraged to take notes and participate in the class critique the last day of class.
3 Day Smalti Intensive
Day 1: Overview of Tools and Materials; Preparing material, 3"x3" "quick sketch"
Day 2: Transfer cartoon, begin work. Discussion on andamento, line work.
Day 3: Complete mosaic composition; review and class critique
