In the Wake of Kon Tiki: Thor Heyerdahl and Andean-Polynesian Contact

In 1947, Thor Heyerdahl wrecked Kon Tiki, a balsa raft from Peru, in eastern Polynesia. Thus began his life-long study of trans-oceanic contact, which included studies on Easter Island and Peru's largest pyramid center.

East Chop resident and Curator Emeritus of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History Jim Richardson will explore Heyerdahl's evidence for Andean-Polynesian contact that has stood for decades. He will discuss the evidence for contact between the Andes and Polynesia focusing on raft traffic between Peru and West Mexico. Reception to follow.

5:30 pm. MVM Library.
