Although not well known or recognized, many African Americans and Native Americans from the Vineyard fought in the Civil War. They were not required or drafted because they were not considered U.S. citizens, however, they felt the same duty to country as other soldiers who went off to battle. Vineyard historian Tom Dresser will examine military records, graves, and any recognition these men attained in their support of the Union cause. While records are sketchy, there are a few reliable tales that have made their way through history.
The Museum will be open following the lecture.
