Wendy Shalen and Kat Cope Artist Lecture

The Old Sculpin Gallery will host a lecture in its upstairs studio space with artist Wendy Shalen and Kat Cope, Wendy Shalen, a painting a drawing instructor from the Arts Student League in New York City will discuss her series of mixed media works entitled "Washed Ashore". In this series Shalen attached floating debris found on the Vineyard, Long Island and Florida to her handmade paper seascapes, drawings and other mixed media works. The beach debris is camouflaged both in the work and often beneath the waves, but ultimately and sadly it is harmful to ocean dwelling creatures.

Kat Cope director of the Old Sculpin Gallery will also discuss her series of work " (Trap)estry" made from derelict fishing gear and floating debris. Cope weaves together fragments of rope line, netting, and floating debris collected from the Southcoast of Massachusetts, the Vineyard and other parts of coastal New England. The environment in which we live is not permanent, yet so often it is treated as if it will continue to exist as is for eternity. The reality is that the way that humans live has a grave effect on the environment and the many creatures that it supports.

After the lecture we will open the floor to a question and answer session. Following the lecture refreshments will be served downstairs in the gallery. The talk is $10 for MVAA members and $15 for non-members.
