Is $100 a Kid Enough for Back-to-School Shopping?

A recent survey found that 67 percent of parents in America with school-aged children plan to spend more than $100 per child on back-to-school shopping this year.

Martha's Vineyard kids don't go back to school till Sept. 9.

But for vacationing Island families and summer workers, that first day of school is likely to be a lot closer: Many schools and colleges start classes well before Labor Day.

For parents, this time of year can be expensive as they outfit the kids for a brand-new school year (unless, like Patch blogger Audra Myerberg, you're just saying no to back-to-school shopping in August).

Just how much are they willing to spend on new school supplies, clothes and electronics?

A recent survey found that 67 percent of parents in America with school-aged children plan to spend more than $100 per child on back-to-school shopping this year, according to Offers.com.

Here's the breakdown of the survey results:

  • 21 percent will spend $1-$100
  • 22 percent will spend $101-$200
  • 21percent will spend $201-$300
  • 8 percent will spend $301-$400
  • 16 percent will spend more than $400
  • 4 percent won't spend anything
  • 8 percent are not sure what they are spending
How much do you plan on spending for back-to-school shopping this year? What does it cost to send a child back to class with everything he or she needs? Tell us in the comments below.
The survey also revealed that majority of the parents plan to do their shopping in stores, rather than online.
