Island Grown Open House

Monday August 31st from 4 to 6pm, Island Grown Initiative will host a free, kid-friendly, interactive Open House for the public at our Thimble Farm property. This open house is a great way to learn more about the food-related work we are doing in the community through our Poultry, Schools, Gleaning and Farm Hub programs.

The tour will begin in our our 30,000 square foot glass greenhouse which features a diverse array of fruits and vegetables being grown hydroponically with supplemental nutrients coming from rainbow trout.

Next up, view our Mobile Poultry Processing Unit on display, available to local famers and backyard growers for humane slaughter of their chickens.

Continue on to the Community Garden space where Island Grown Schools will be set up with a tomato taste test, seed activity and the High Schools’ 1/8th acre garden plot.

Continue through the fields to see first hand how our gleaning program harvests excess produce from local farms to distribute to islanders in need.

Finish up the tour in our newly planted orchard, which features a diverse array of fruit and nut trees.
