Vineyarders Fall to Dangerous Danvers: Photo Gallery

Before an "astronomical" crowd of fans at the Garden, Martha's Vineyard Regional High School fell to Danvers in the Division 3 state semifinal contest in the Vineyarders' first appearance in the game in more than three decades.

Martha's Vineyard Regional High School closed after half a day of school and seven buses of students crammed into TD Garden to watch the Vineyarders compete for a berth in the Division 3 state championship game.

The result wasn't what they wanted. But it was a ride Martha's Vineyard won't soon forget.

Despite a strong effort throughout a closely contested semifinal tilt on Tuesday in Boston, Martha's Vineyard was eliminated from the postseason with a 50-47 loss to Danvers.

Izak Browne led all scorers with 17 points, including three from long distance, in the loss. Jack Roberts was next with 12 markers while Brandon Watkins chipped in 8 points of his own in defeat.

Browne was the final Vineyarder with the ball in his hands as he took a pass from Liam Weston near midcourt with his team trailing by three points. After splitting two defenders, Browne found a look at a game-tying three, but couldn't connect on the desperation attempt and the stellar MV season came to a close.

"The number of people that came out was astronomical," said head coach Michael Joyce. "This is the first time in 35 years we've been here. This group, I wouldn't have predicted it at the beginning of the year with just three returning players...I think that next week and as people start talking about it, they'll get it an idea of just how neat this was not just for (the players) but for the people of The Island to get behind them and the run they made this year."
