Albert B. Lester Memorial Disc Golf Tournament
On Saturday, June 8, a disc golf tourney and beach-themed fun-day will take place at Hospital Hill, Medfield, MA in memory of Albert B. Lester. Supports MCAP for substance abuse prevention.

On Saturday, June 8th, a frisbee disc golf tournament and fun-day will take place over at Hospital Hill. This beach-themed event is a community fundraiser in memory of my uncle, Albert Lester, to promote substance abuse prevention and education.
A disc golf course will weave around the beautiful fields of McCarthy Park (Hospital Hill Fields) while competitions, beach games, and family fun will entertain those not occupied by the course. Frisbee-throwing lessons will be available for players new or inexperienced in the sport. Kan Jam, Cornhole, volleyball, and other summertime sand classics will be enjoyed by all in the tournament central.

What is Disc Golf?
Played much like traditional golf, Disc Golf involves throwing a Frisbee disc instead of a ball and clubs. The goal is to complete each hole in the fewest number of throws. Players start from a tee area and throw their Frisbee disc to a “hole” (an elevated metal basket). Players try to navigate the 9 or 18 hole course in the fewest amount of throws as possible while enjoying the challenge of negotiating the environment they are surrounded by.

Disc Golf differs from traditional golf in that it is environment-friendly: unlike ball golf, a disc golf course does not need trees removed, grass mowed and watered daily, plants uprooted or non-native species planted. The impact of a disc golf course on the surrounding area is minimal.
Who is Albert Lester?
Albert Lester, of Westwood, Massachusetts, was a 31-year old graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who had given up an excellent career as a software engineer to become a teacher of high school mathematics and science when he was killed on his bicycle by a drunk driver during a bicycling event in upstate New York. Albert, my uncle, was killed by a young adult he would have loved to have helped.
In my uncle’s memory, I hope to teach the community about the sometimes lethal dangers of abusing alcohol. I also wish to bring the community together in a fun and safe environment where everyone can participate and enjoy the outdoors. The disc golf tournament is something everyone can enjoy, and proceeds will be donated toward the new community initiative, Medfield Cares About Prevention (MCAP), to combat substance abuse. Just as Albert Lester would have been a teacher, I want to extend his legacy by helping to educate the community about the dangers of drinking and driving. There will be information about substance abuse prevention in our community at the event.
