On the 250th anniversary of First Baptist Church of Medfield, 25.0 reasons why I love my church (by Lauren Cope, a 36 year resident of Medfield)
1.First Baptist Church (FBC) Medfield has been around for 250 years, and it’s not going anywhere.
2.The Sunday music is ethereal and sometimes, it seems like we might actually raise the rafters.
3.We love and care for each other.
4.There is infant and toddler care on Sunday mornings so parents can enjoy the service without distraction.
5.Kids (through age 4) have Sunday school classes during the second half of the morning service where they learn lessons of faith and then have time to play with friends in a clean, fun-filled room.
6.Parents and parishioners set a good example for children of what it means to love God more than self.
7.When we pray, we believe that God hears us and that He speaks to us through His Word.
8.FBC is filled with faithful believers who are nothing like the caricatures of Christians portrayed on TV or in movies. Members are real with each other about the struggle to be Christlike. We know we often fail, and we also remember that when God convicts us, He also empowers us to change.
9.The mission and beliefs of First Baptist Church of Medfield are the very same today as they were when the church was incorporated 250 years ago.
10.We have multi-generational church-wide events (e.g. monthly family dinners September-June) special Christmas music performances; church clean up days (yippee) and many other random reasons we get together as a whole family.
11.Together we study the Bible to continually learn how we can please God rather than trying to please ourselves or others.
12.There is also a youth group that meets twice a month during the school year.
13.There are weekly home Bible studies for adults (Oct-May)
14.We have events tailored for women and others tailored for men throughout the year.
15.The pastor (Hunter Guthrie) has a Masters in Theology and is extremely knowledgeable about the Word and the world.
16.As such, he is a great teacher who guides us through difficult scriptural passages and makes them come alive, sometimes with his wicked wit (Bostonian here ;-) and always with a unique, humble-confidence.
17.It is a warm and friendly church where new friends become old friends, and old friends become like family.
18.Children and seniors know each other’s names and spend time together.Seniors enjoy the energy of kids, and kids benefit from the wisdom a senior brings into their lives.
19.People pray for us and over us, and they pray without ceasing when there’s an emergency.
20.Fads don’t change our core beliefs or the Bible.According to numerous search engines: The Bible is still the number one book ever sold and distributed worldwide (estimated at 5 to 7 billion copies in total).
21.It’s a place where we are expected to pitch in and make a difference.This is a wonderful way for our children to see that each of us was created to add value and not to simply to be consumers.Learning about God’s love for them, children come to understand their own value in life.
22.Pastor Hunter shows us by example and through his words, what it means to live the Christian life.
23.We believe the Bible hasn’t changed and we therefore modify our lives according to its principles and don’t try to change it to accommodate an ever-changing world.
24. The church building is not synonymous with our faith. What we believe as a church is far more important than the architecture and structure we meet in each Sunday.
25.As a 250 year old church our primary cause for celebration is God’s goodness to Medfield and First Baptist Church, and God’s faithfulness in keeping its doors open that long.While the facility and the architecture are interesting and noteworthy, a building still standing after 250 years pales by comparison to the church of God that continues 2000 years after its founder walked this earth.
