Champs Again: Medfield Boys' Lacrosse Wins 2nd Straight State Title

The 2011 Medfield High School boys' lacrosse team are MIAA Division 2 State Champions for the second straight season after knocking off Algonquin, 13-9 in Friday's title game.

WORCESTER - Let the celebration begin.

The Medfield High School boys’ lacrosse team defeated Algonquin, 13-9 Friday at Foley Stadium in Worcester to capture its second straight MIAA Division 2 State Championship and fifth in program history.

Leading 9-8 heading into the fourth quarter, Medfield showed the heart and experience of a champion, delivering the finishing blow to Algonquin’s title hopes with a 4-1 run in the quarter to close out the game and secure its second straight state title.

Medfield’s determination and resiliency was needed for the entire 48 minutes, but more importantly, in the first half. The Warriors were caught trading goals with a talented Algonquin squad in a fast-moving 24 minutes of lacrosse.

Medfield even trailed Algonquin, 3-2 after the first quarter but rallied in the second to head into the break with a 6-5 lead.

The third quarter remained as close as the first two as Algonquin and Medfield again traded goals and when 36 minutes were in the books, the Warriors led 9-8.

Then the champions turned it up a notch in the fourth quarter, blowing by Algonquin and dominating ball possession for the majority of the period.

As the clock ran down many Medfield players on the field congratulated each other around goalkeeper Sam Aronson and when the final whistle blew the rest of the team joined in on the celebration in front of their own cage.

For many players this is their second title in two years and for the program it is its fifth. Medfield showed incredible depth on offense as six players had multiple goal games. Connor Roddy led the team with three, including two in the fourth quarter, Chris Diana had two, Andrew Melvin had two, Matthew Crowell had two David Parsons had two and Peter Gill had two.

Even after losing its first Tri-Valley League game in eight years and failing to win the TVL title in 10 seasons, these Warriors delivered another state championship to an already impressive wall of banners.
