Dale St School HOLIDAY Flea Market a great success!

HOLIDAY FLEA MARKET at Dale Street School

Information and Images Submitted by Dale Street Teacher, Mike Douglas. Dale St School teachers Mr. Douglas and Mrs. Flynn held their annual Holiday Flea Market.

"The Holiday Flea Market was held on Tuesday, December 19th. We had some current staff, former staff, and parents volunteers help, too. Our classes were able to raise $2,500 to help the Medfield Home Committee. The students should be really proud of themselves.The Dale Street Community continues to amaze me!";

The following is Mr. Douglas' letter which went home to the parents of Dale St School students.

"Mrs. Flynn's class and our class decided that we would like to continue the annual tradition of helping people in our own community after helping students in Zimbabwe through the Coalition for Courage program.

We brainstormed ways we could raise money through a one day flea market to benefit the Medfield Home Committee. Students made many homemade craft items, sold donated items (books,games, etc.), held raffles for items, etc.This was a great opportunity to give back, and learn that everyone can do something to affect their community in a positive way.

Students worked on these items during their free time: at home,during snack and during recess. The students designed artistic posters that were displayed around the school and created videos advertising the event. It
was a great example of respect and collaboration.

Students were able to address the Social Studies standard of how the interaction of buyers and sellers influences the prices of goods and services in markets through supply and demand. They participated in this in real life adjusting their prices appropriately to reflect their market.

The one day flea market ( and a much smaller bargain outlet the next day) was held during the lunch and recess periods. The students were involved with the process from the beginning to the end. The students drove the activity. They seem to understand the importance of what they planned, why we did this activity, how it will make the recipients feel, and how it made themselves feel now that the activity has been completed. It was a great example of showing continuous growth and compassion for others."
