Deadline for Ideas Competition is Nov. 21, 2014

Submit your ideas to re-use the massive pumps at the state hospital by Nov. 21 to be eligible for the $1,000 honorarium!

Art in Public Places, a Medfield Foundation Inc. initiative, reminds you that the deadline for the PIPELINE Ideas Competition is Friday, Nov. 21, 2014 at 5 pm.

PIPELINE is an Ideas Competition to repurpose two 5’ x 5’ x 6’ massive industrial cast iron water pumps as a public art project to celebrate the quirky anomalies and rich history of the abandoned state hospital in Medfield, MA. The 1890s pumps provided a reliable flow of water to power the Medfield State Hospital.

Last April, the town voted to purchase the adjacent hospital property. Many of the buildings may be torn down for development. When this happens, the PIPELINE public art project will be one of the few elements remaining to tell the rich history of the state hospital site, a significant part of the town’s history for over 100 years.

PIPELINE seeks artist’s bold and creative ideas about how to best honor this heritage and tell the story of this unusual place with non-traditional materials. Artists could propose to create a sculpture, functional elements within the new park (like seating or bike racks), or re-use parts as signage or way-finding tools along the Bay Circuit walking trail on this property. The goal is to re-use the massive pump components to add a layer of unique features and strengthen public connection to both the water and the history of this site creating a PIPELINE to our past.

To inspire serious and creative thinking, an honorarium of $1,000 will be awarded to one artist or team selected from among the submissions. The competition is open to everyone. The deadline is Nov. 21 at 5 pm. All submissions will be available for public review and comment in December.
