Farmers' Market to Return to Medfield on May 31

After a successful first year, organizers will be bringing back a Farmers' Market to Medfield, beginning on May 31 and running through Oct. 11.

A Farmers’ Market is returning to the Medfield center on Thursday, May 31 and will run every Thursday from 2 to 6:30 p.m. through Oct. 11 on the grounds of the on North Street.

Last June, Medfield debuted its first-ever Farmers' Market thanks in large part to the efforts of residents Fred Bunger, Bob Luttman and First Parish Church administrator Sandra Andreassi.

“Members of the church thought it was an interesting thing to try,” said Bunger in a June 10, 2011 Medfield Patch article. “We have a great location, an interest in being local [by providing area-grown produce and supporting local vendors] and doing good things for the environment."

Richard DeSorgher, Medfield town historian and member of the Downtown Study Committee, told Patchhe he was hopeful the farmers' market would bring more business to the center of town.

“[I feel that] it will bring more business to the downtown stores, which [helps] in keeping the downtown alive, which is so important to small towns like Medfield,” he said.

The market found success in 2011, according to a July 11, 2011 Medfield Patch article by Theresa Knapp, who wrote that organizers of the weekly farmers' makret estimated "hundreds of people visit the market each week."

As a result of last summer's success, the market is back in 2012. Local and area farmers will bring fresh produce and other producers will feature food such as honey, breads and more. May and June is a time to buy strawberries. All sorts of salad greens and veggies are just becoming available.  Visit the market weekly to see what is new from the farmers and what community organizations offer as different ones participate.

Why support local producers?

In addition to healthy nutrition for your family, the food looks and tastes better, it strengthens your community ties by getting to know those who grow the food we eat and it often helps you learn more about where you could learn how food is grown.
