Filmmaker Issues Call for Bubblegum Bob Stories at Medfield Day

This year at Medfield Day, Saturday, Sept. 27, residents will have a special opportunity to help bring a unique local story to life. A new documentary film, “Bubblegum Bob,” is in production, celebrating the remarkable life of a beloved figure, Robert Kennefic, who has been part of Medfield's fabric for over six decades.

Filmmaker Christopher Stephenson and his crew will be hosted by Medfield TV on North Street throughout the day. He is inviting community members to stop by and share their favorite “Bob stories” on camera. Stephenson noted he’s excited about capturing stories that showcase the heart of Medfield and the extraordinary community kindness toward Bob, who was orphaned as an infant and struggled to support himself after the closure of Medfield State Hospital in 2003.

“Bob’s story isn’t just about one man—it’s about the spirit of Medfield itself,” said Stephenson, a former 24-year Medfield resident. “This is a rare chance to preserve the memories and moments that have defined Bob’s life, and to celebrate what makes this town truly special.”

Inspired by seeing soldiers toss candy to kids from parade floats, and the joy that brought to the kid’s faces, Bob began handing out bubblegum on his days off from work at the state hospital. Decades after that practice was no longer deemed appropriate, his nickname still holds.

“Perhaps his greatest legacy is his steadfast attendance at virtually every town event for most of his adult life. Through parades, sporting events, concerts, plays, and beyond, Bob has quietly connected with and inspired generations of Medfield residents,” Stephenson added. “Now, community members have the chance to give back by sharing personal stories, laughter, and memories for a film that will shine a light on community, compassion and resilience.”
