The Butterfly Tree Shop on Main Street has been a staple in the center of town for 15 years, but will close at the end of February, so stop by NOW to shop all her discounted items and say thank you to Maria!
Maria writes: "Nestled in the heart of Medfield, Massachusetts, The Butterfly Tree Gift and Clothing Boutique — located at 505 Main Street in a historic home dating back to 1725 — is preparing to close its doors.
Owner Maria Piedra is retiring from retail and shifting her focus back to real estate.Maria’s
journey to becoming a shop owner began during one of the most challenging periods of her life. While undergoing treatment for breast cancer, she embarked on a path of personal transformation. During that time, she earned her real estate license and in 2009 joined Prudential Page, now Berkshire Hathaway Page Realty. From her desk at 489 Main Street, Maria noticed a “For Lease” sign across the way. She envisioned the space filled with meaningful gifts, stylish clothing, and one‑of‑a‑kind treasures. In April 2011, that vision became reality when The Butterfly Tree Boutique opened its doors.

For nearly fifteen years, residents of Medfield and surrounding communities have stepped inside to discover a thoughtfully curated collection of gifts, jewelry, clothing, accessories, handbags, home décor, and baby items — all chosen to celebrate beauty, creativity, and sustainability. Each item was selected to spark joy, connection, and a sense of discovery. It became a place where every find told a story.
“Closing the store is bittersweet, but it’s time,” Maria shared. “Since COVID, running a stand‑alone brick‑and‑mortar store has been a challenge. People have gotten very comfortable shopping online, and it’s become the norm. In‑person shopping has declined, and I’m a people person. I love
chatting with my customers and hearing about their lives — the new babies, birthdays, graduations, careers, milestones, vacations, and more. The Butterfly Tree has been more than just a place to get a
meaningful gift or a fabulous outfit. It’s been a place for conversation and connection. ”The name Butterfly Tree has always held deep meaning for Maria. “It’s about change and transformation —
going into the cocoon, experiencing a metamorphosis, and emerging filled with beauty, ready to take flight,” she explained.

Since COVID, Maria has faced a series of personal and professional challenges: the forced shutdown of her business, the lasting shift in consumer shopping habits, caring for her mother through hospice and end‑of‑life, and taking on guardianship for her sister with special needs. “I entered the cocoon once again,” she said, “and now it’s time to re‑emerge transformed.” Maria isn’t retiring entirely — just from retail. She’s ready to return to real estate full‑time, bringing with her the creativity, marketing experience, and business acumen she honed as a small‑business owner. “I’m excited to help my real estate clients achieve their goals,” she said."
