Medfield Cares About Prevention to Facilitate Parent Conversations about Teen Drinking

Kathy McDonald, Director of Medfield Outreach and Clinical Social Worker, will be joined by Medfield parent, Kate Blood, and Meri Haas, Medfield Outreach’s Substance Use Prevention Coordinator to talk with parents and guardians on Zoom.

Did you know that Medfield's teen drinking rates are 50% higher than neighboring towns?

Furthermore, many youth report acquiring alcohol from their parents and hosting social events that include alcohol with their parent's knowledge. As part of their Social Host Campaign, the Medfield Cares About Prevention Coalition, MCAP, is hosting a series of parent conversations to facilitate discussions about these sobering statistics.

"Parents deserve a forum to talk about Medfield’s teen drinking culture, explore the myths and misinformation about teens learning to drink ‘responsibly,’ and explore how to talk to other parents about their expectations for their kids,” said Kate Blood, MCAP member, Medfield resident, and mom of three school-aged children.

According to the 2018 MetroWest Adolescent Health Survey, 41.7% of Medfield High School students report having consumed alcohol with in the last 30 days. In addition, about one in seven of those who reported drinking within the last month stated that they accessed alcohol with the full knowledge of their parent or guardian.

This conversation is part of MCAP’s “Parents Who Host Lose The Most” social host awareness campaign. MCAP is an Medfield Foundation initiative administered by Medfield Outreach.
