Medfield Farmers' Market Vendors Offer Variety of Food and Fun

More fresh produce becomes available as the summer progresses with sunshine and rain. Kids activities are popular too.

Summer is now in full swing and more fresh produce will be found at the Medfield Farmers’ Market on the lawn of the First Parish Meeting House on North St. from 2-6:30 each Thursday through September. The market is indebted to Needham Bank for its generous support again this year.

Staffed by White Barn Farm, a colorful stall displays a variety of green shades in its salad makings of various lettuces, kale, spinach, and its snap peas. Of course most of the herbs like basil, parsley, rosemary, thyme and lavender are also shades of green. Then, there is orange in the carrots, small and delicious, red for radishes and yellow summer squash. As the season continues with sunshine and rain, more colors, aromas and fresh vegetables and flowers will be appearing. White Barn Farm uses organic type methods in growing its products.

Kids are welcome while parents shop. There are flower pot painting and seed planting activities sponsored by Starbucks, the coffee people. Starbucks stall for adults offers advice on the benefits of used coffee grounds as an insect deterrent and soil enhancer in vegetable and flower gardens. Although no fresh coffee is sold at the market, a bag of the used grounds is available for free to take home and try in the garden. First Parish church members also offer activities for kids while parents visit the Bake Sale table, offering fruit hand pies, protein bites, rosemary garlic parmesan biscuits, lemonade and gluten free dog biscuits. Proceeds from the Bake Sale table go directly toward the maintenance of the historic First Parish Meeting House (UU Church).

The Jordan Brothers Seafood refrigerated truck on site each week with the fresh catch of the day has been one of the most popular vendors each season. Wagwan, the Jamaican Jerk bar, a new vendor this year, seems to be catching up in popularity. Its West Indies cuisine may not be too familiar to Medfield but customers are drawn to the smells of its chicken or pork with unusual spices. There are cones filled with the meat, beans and spices to eat immediately or prepared entrees fresh or frozen to take home for later. Pangea Cuisines, also a food truck, used by the owner for her catering service, is on site to sell paleo type cuisine also to eat on site or to take home and cook for supper or freeze for later.

In addition to the weekly farm to table and food vendors there are artists, crafts people, specialty confectioners, wellness therapists, handmade soap vendors, and bee keepers who attend the market on an irregular basis, some bi-weekly some monthly but all worth a visit to the weekly market. These often include Art by Nicki, jewelry; MDS Soapworks, Sherborn Soap, Mini Emporium, kids clothing boutique truck; Juice Plus, fresh eggs from the Schilling family of Medfield, Confectionery Creations’ jams, jellies, relishes and homemade pickles, as well as home-baked bread and fresh local strawberries as long as they are in season. Most of the vendors at the market have their own websites and/or facebook pages for more information.
