Medfield Youth's Eagle Scout Project, STOP THE BLEED Kits

Learn about STOP THE BLEED kits, Jack Gargano's Eagle Scout Project and how important this will be for the community of Medfield.

Medfield Youth Jack Gargano Is An Eagle Scout Candidate With A Passion For His Project...

Medfield resident, Xaverian Brothers High School Sophomore and Troop 89 Eagle Scout candidate, Jack Gargano is working hard on spreading the word about his STOP THE BLEED Kits project!

Many of us haven't heard about STOP THE BLEED kits, but Jack took it upon himself to find out why these are important especially for student athletes as Gargano's younger brother Tommy is an active hockey player.

When asked about his project, Gargano stated, "I am currently working toward earning the rank of Eagle Scout with Troop 89, based here in Medfield. As part of this process, I am organizing a community service project, which is to build STOP THE BLEED® kits, stations, and train people within our community on how to use them. These stations will be placed in multiple higher risk locations throughout the community including a local school, a church and equipping a local ice hockey arena’s coaches, as well as educate and train 15-20 individuals who are more likely to come into a situation where this training would be beneficial. I believe this project can be truly beneficial in ensuring the safety of our community."

He went on to state, "Some key points about the helpfulness of STOP THE BLEED® kits and trainings include the following statistics...

• Early application of tourniquets, before the onset of shock, is strongly associated with increased survival rates. The Average time to bleed out is 3-5 minutes according to Stopthebleed.org, the average time for a 1st responder to arrive is 7-10 minutes, trauma related deaths worldwide due to bleeding is 40%.
• Uncontrolled hemorrhage is a leading cause of preventable death in trauma situations, and Stop the Bleed directly addresses this issue.
• Public awareness campaigns like "STOP THE BLEED®" are contributing to increased awareness and use of tourniquets.
• By enabling bystanders to intervene before professional help arrives Stop the Bleed can significantly reduce the time it takes to control bleeding.
• Tourniquets are increasingly being applied by a wider range of personnel, including laypersons."

Gargano also explained that the recipients of these kits WILL be receiving training from Mr. Andrew Bond (at no cost to them) at the Medfield Public Safety Building and that Mr. Bond is a certified STB Trainer and he will be donating his time.

The kits will be installed on a wall in a STOP THE BLEED Cabinet as part of a one stop first aid station to be added to an area such as an AED station, every station holds 8 kits.

Gargano set a goal of raising $3,500 to cover the cost of these kits and stations and he just recently hit his goal. He is incredibly grateful for the financial support he has already received from his family, friends and community. He stated his neighborhood has been incredibly supportive and generous and he is humbled to live in Medfield where the community is so strong and giving.

Gargano expressed his immense thanks to the Medfield Fire Department for all their help and assistance. Last fall, he set up a table at the Medfield Fire Department Open House displaying these kits and explained how they work to everyone who stopped by his table. It was evident that Jack is passionate about this project.

Gargano also attended the January 2026 Medfield Lions Dinner Meeting as the guest speaker and he educated the entire club on the importance of these kits and received a donation of $250 toward his goal.

"My goal is to have the funding to build kits, build stations, and educate the people within the community who are the most likely to be in a situation where they can help. I have a set time and place to assemble the STOP THE BLEED kits and a separate training set up for this month with, Mr. Andrew Bond, a certified STOP THE BLEED trainer at the Medfield Public Safety Building" stated Gargano.

Gargano's future plans are to go into the medical profession, which makes this the perfect Eagle Scout project for him and he is to be admired for all his work. He anticipates becoming an Eagle Scout later this calendar year.
