Montrose School Freshman Completes Providence Marathon

Brooke Harrison of Franklin, a freshman at Montrose School in Medfield, ran her first marathon on May 1 in Providence.

Brooke began training for the marathon last year when her father was diagnosed with cancer. “My dad’s diagnosis changed my perspective on a lot of things, and it inspired me to make the most out of life,” she said. “I wanted to do something that would be challenging and motivate others who are trying to overcome obstacles in their lives.”

Caitlin Montes de Oca, Brooke’s French teacher at Montrose School, mentored Brooke throughout her training and raced with her. The two also focused on diet and motivation techniques. Brooke found her motivation during difficult times by comparing her efforts to those of her father as he underwent his treatment regimen. “If he can get zapped by a radiation beam every day, I can crank out a couple of miles!” said Brooke.

Brooke completed the Providence Marathon in 4:12:40, with her teacher and fellow runner Ms. de Oca racing beside her.

Many of Brooke’s classmates at Montrose School attended the marathon to cheer her on. At her request, they positioned themselves strategically along the route to encourage her to keep going for the entire 26.2 miles.

“Running is a community sport and has taught me so many lessons that I can apply to other aspects of my life,” said Brooke. “I had full support of my efforts from the entire Montrose community. I wouldn't be where I am today without my wonderful French teacher, Ms. Montes de Oca. She coached me throughout my entire training process and provided valuable resources which helped me achieve optimum success.”
