Montrose Summer Program Benefits Girls

Every summer, Montrose School buzzes with activity as girls build mastery, gain momentum, and make memories at the Montrose Summer Program.

Girls from dozens of local schools join Montrose students and faculty to get in shape for fall sports, master SAT strategies, perform on stage for families and friends, learn the basics of oil painting, prepare for the coming year’s classes, and more.

In keeping with Montrose’s philosophy of educating the whole person, the Montrose Summer Program includes not only academic programs, but also sports, art, drama, and special interest classes. As usual, 2015’s Montrose Summer Program features core academic classes such as Algebra Prep and Review, Reading for Mastery, and SAT Preparation for Math and Verbal (Reading Skills and Essay Writing).

Other courses allow students to explore their academic interests in a relaxed, creative environment. For example, in Create Your Own Blog, girls will learn how to develop an informative blog focused on a niche topic of interest to each student. In Robotics, girls will design, test and program their own robots, sew circuit boards, and create art that conducts electricity.

One of 2014’s most popular courses, Musical Theater Improv with Mrs. Holly Sullivan, returns this year in expanded form. The class will now be offered at two levels, for girls entering grades 4 through 6 or for girls entering grades 7 and 8. Participants will spend the week working on their acting skills, singing technique and ability to create a character on the spot. Each week-long program will culminate in a Montrose Summer Program original production, to be written, choreographed, blocked and performed by the participants.

For summer 2015, the Montrose Summer Program expands to offer more classes to younger girls. For example, girls entering grades 3 through 6 can enjoy Classic Camp Fun! which will offer indoor and outdoor active games and a craft hour. Girls entering grades 3 through 5 will love an original offering, Explore America with American Girl Dolls, in which they can learn about the historical time periods of four different dolls.

The Montrose Summer Program’s core offerings, its academic courses, have a history of helping girls prepare for the coming school year in a productive, even enjoyable, way. “I definitely learned a lot,” said one participant in last summer’s SAT Verbal program. “Nothing could improve it!” said another of Math Made Fun. “It is so much fun!” The average class size of eight allowed students to work closely with teachers, ask questions, and receive constructive feedback. “I improved my writing with assistance from a great teacher,” said one participant of High School Writing Success.

Montrose School is an independent college preparatory day school with a Catholic tradition for girls in grades 6-12. Located on 14 acres in downtown Medfield, Montrose School welcomes students from over 45 towns and communities in MetroWest and the South Shore as well as international students from all over the world.
