UPDATED: Next Stop: MIAA D3 South Quarterfinals for Medfield Boys' Hockey

Warriors top Medway for third consecutive time this season, 4-2.

FRANKLIN – The Medfield High School boys' hockey team knocked off rival Medway Thursday night, 4-2, to advance in the MIAA Division 3 South Sectional state tournament.

"Great game and great win," said Medfield head coach Toby Carlow. "This win was all about senior leadership. Led by Jimmy [Magrath] and Mike Brown, the team would not let this be their last game and battled back against a very good Medway [team] who played their hearts out. Great atmosphere [Thursday] in a near sellout in Franklin, great student support with kids tailgating before the game."

The 1oth seeded Warriors had to come back from a 2-1 deficit to beat the seventh seeded Mustangs for a third straight time this season. Medfield (14-5-3) beat rivl Medway (15-6-1) 4-2 in January and 4-1 in February before knocking the Stangs out, 4-2 again, in March.

Medfield got a goal from Tyler Etzkorn, assisted by Chris Saia in the first period but trailed Medway, 2-1 after the first 15 minutes. After a scoreless second period, Medfield's offense came to life, scoring three, third period goals (one an empty-netter). Ben Cox evened the score at two, converting a pass from Magrath and John Buchanan netted the game-winner on a pass from Brown. Magrath finished off the scoring with an empty net tally, assisted by Brian McCloud.

Warriors' goalie, Connor Roddy, was his usual self in net, making several key saves to limi Medway's damage when Medfield's defense needed a lift.

"Connor Roddy was great in the net, making big saves to keep us in the game when we were trailing 2-1," Carlow said.

The win punches Medfield's ticket to the D3 South quarterfinals against Friday's Abington-Blue Hills winner. The quarterfinals are scheduled to be played Sunday at Gallo Ice Arena in Buzzards Bay at a time to be announced.

"Now it is on to the next round against either Abington/East Bridgewater or Blue Hills on Sunday afternoon," said Carlow. "We need to be ready to play our best game in order to move on and keep playing."
