PHOTOS: Familiar Foe Ends Medfield Volleyball’s Season, Tourney Win Streak

Westboro snapped the Mefield High School girls' volleyball team's 15-match state tournament winning streak Monday, with a 3-1 victory to end the Warriors' season.

The last time the Medfield High School girls’ volleyball team lost a MIAA Division 2 Central State Tournament game was 2007 – a 3-2 loss to Westboro in the Sectional Finals.

Westboro won the state title that year – the last team not named Medfield to do so in three years.

Since that 2007 loss to the Rangers, Medfield has won three Division 2 State Titles, 15 consecutive state tournament matches and has ended Westboro’s season every year since. …

 Then came Monday.

Westboro atoned for three year's of season-ending losses to Medfield on the Warriors' home-court Monday, with a 3-1 victory in the quarterfinal round of the MIAA Division 2 Central Sectional State Tournament.

Westboro’s presence in the frontcourt challenged Medfield most of the night – leading the Rangers to a match win in four games (25-15, 25-17, 16-25, 25-17) to effectively end the Warriors' reign atop the division.

After dropping the first two games of the best-of-five match, Medfield responded with a dominating start to game three enroute to a passionate, 25-16 victory.

But the Rangers responded early in the fourth game to establish momentum and while Medfield fought to play catch-up, Westboro made enough plays to stay a few points ahead of the Warriors.

The loss snaps Medfield’s 15-match winning streak in the state tournament and ends its season without a state title for the first time since 2007. Medfield, the tournament’s fourth seed finishes the season with a 14-5 record. Westboro, the tourney’s fifth seed, moves on to the sectional semi-finals against unbeaten and top seed Marlboro.
